Curriculum Vitae

 

Piero Zanello is full professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Siena from 1994. He has been the Director of the same Department from 1996 to 2002.

Since 1987, he is fellow of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the Italian Chemical Society, and he has been member of the Management Committee of the same Division in the triennium 2006-2008.

He is member of the management of the inter-university Consortium "Research in Chemistry of Metals in Biological Systems" (CIRCMSB) since its foundation (1992).

He is fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 2007.   

Since 1998, he is the organizer of the biennial conference: Chianti Meeting on Inorganic Electrochemistry (ChiMIE).

From about 30 years he is engaged in the determination of the redox propeties of organometallic and coordination compounds through the use of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. During this period he collaborated, and still collaborates, with many Italian and foreign research groups, facing often with recent topics in Inorganic Chemistry.

He is coauthor of the general chemistry textbook "Le Basi della Chimica", P.Zanello, S.Mangani, G.Valensin, CEA, Milano 2001, and author of the electrochemistry textbook  "Inorganic Electrochemistry. Theory, Practice and Applications", RSC, Cambridge, UK, 2003.

He has been the Editor of  "Chains, Clusters, Inclusion Compounds, Paramagnetic Labels, and Organic Rings”, Vol. 5 of the series "Stereochemistry of Organometallic and Inorganic Compounds"; Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1994. 

He has been member of the Evaluation and Selection Panel (Panel 1) for Scientific Projects "Chemistry 2001" of the Portuguese FCT, as well as for the International Call for postdoctoral research positions "Science 2007" of the Portuguese IST/CQE.    

In occasion of his 65° birthday, the journal Inorganica Chimica Acta devoted him a special volume of the series “Protagonists in Chemistry” (issue 6 of the Volume 361, 2008). In the same occasion, the Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry also devoted him a special volume (issue 12, volume 11, 2007).

He has been invited to have lectures in Italian and foreign universities.

He acts periodically as reviewer for European as well as American scientific journals.

He is author/coauthor of  369 scientific papers.

Fields of Research:

 The main research interests are concerned with the study of the electron-transfer ability of metal complexes (from coordination to organometallic derivatives) by modern electrochemical techniques .The redox processes emerging from electrochemical investigations are further elucidated through both spectroscopic techniques on macroelectrolysis (UV-vis., IR, EPR) or microelectrolysis (UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry) and theoretical analysis (EH, ab initio/DFT).
